We’ve been running Fliteschool Noosa for a few years now and one thing never gets old, the names people come up with for what we do.
I was out on the Noosa River a while back, solo session, just cruising. Someone on the bank watched me come past and yelled out:
“Hey wow, where did you get that hoverboard thingeee!”
Thingeee. Three e’s. Fully committed.
We love it. Because every variation tells you something about what the person saw when they first clapped eyes on one of these boards flying silently across the river.

Clearly a popular one. There’s something very Back to the Future about a rider gliding above the water with nothing visibly holding them up.
Hard to argue with, honestly.
The hover is real, it’s just a hydrofoil wing doing the lifting, not whatever Doc Brown had going on.
This one mostly comes from kids, and it’s one of our favourites.
You’ll hear it yelled from the bank with genuine urgency.
“Mum, look, FLYING SURFBOARD.”
They’re not wrong, you are flying and it does resemble a surfboard.
Full marks.
Also from kids and also extremely accurate.
There’s something about the way the board lifts and the rider just floats there, silent, above the water.
We’ll take it.
A fair starting point. There’s a board, it’s electric, you ride it on water. The missing piece is the foil, the wing sitting underwater that generates lift and gets you airborne. Without it, you’re on a motorised paddleboard.
Still fun, but a different thing.
Getting warmer. Foil boarding is a real discipline. Riders use a foil wing under a standard surfboard or kiteboard to generate lift from wave energy or kite power.
No motor.
The eFoil adds electric propulsion, which is what makes it accessible regardless of surf or wind conditions.
Close, but a jet board stays on the water’s surface, propelled by a water jet, no foil, no flying. Similar energy, different experience.
Technically spot on. Hydro (water), foil (wing that generates lift), electric (motor and battery).
Not the catchiest, but it covers everything.
eFoil comes from electric plus foil.
The electric motor drives a propeller under the board, the foil wing generates lift as speed increases, and the rider rises above the surface.
It’s the term that’s stuck across the industry globally, and it’s what most people will search for when they’re trying to find out more.
Because we ride Fliteboard. Fliteboard is the brand. Fliteboarding is the verb that comes with it, same as surfing, kiteboarding, or wakeboarding.
Specific to the equipment and the experience.
If you’ve been searching around, you might have come across Lift Foils. US based, solid product, well known internationally. Same category as eFoil, full electric propulsion, no prior experience needed. People searching “Lift eFoil” are looking at the same type of thing.
Waydoo is another name that comes up. A Chinese brand that’s brought the entry price of eFoiling down considerably. Same basic concept, electric motor, hydrofoil, wireless controller. The price point is lower and the build reflects that. For someone wanting to dip a toe in before committing to a premium setup, it’s on the radar. We ride Fliteboard because we think it’s the best product available, and that’s what we stock and teach on.
You might also have seen motor assist systems mentioned. These are small motor units that attach to an existing foil board to help you get up on foil and access waves that would otherwise take a lot more paddling. Foil Drive makes one. Worth knowing it exists.
